Ons skop hierdie jaar se Bibberfees af met die opening van ‘n kunsuitstalling deur ons eie kunstenaars en ook kunstenaars van naburige dorpe. Dis ‘n voorreg om hierdie mense in ons gemeenskap te hê. Die Vrydagaand voorspel om baie gesellig om die kaggelvuur te wees.

Op die feesterrein die volgende dag, word die fees amptelik geopen deur ons voorsitter, Gerhard Wilken en versier deur trompoppies en ‘n skoot vanuit Ou Grietjie, ons kanon.

Die fietsryers spring saam met Ou Grietjie weg op een van twee roetes. Dit klink wonderlik en iets groots is hier vir die toekoms aan die kom.

Ons het hope vermaak wat aanpas by ons gemeenskap soos skaapskeer, ‘n kuddekompetisie en heerlike skaapvleis geregte om aan te smul.

Die kuddekompetisie is ‘n wedywering tussen boere en hul skape, van hier en omliggende dorpe. Kom kyk hoe lyk die suid-Vrystaat se top diere.

Ons besgekleede dame en heer sal deur die dag beoordeel word en sal vanselfsprekend voorkeur geniet as hul wol uitrustings aan het.

Resieshonde van mnr Dawid van der Merwe is iets wat jul nie kan mis nie. As jy nie gou genoeg kyk nie, is hulle verby.

Een van die hoogtepunte beloof om die skaap-modeparade te wees. Het jy al ‘n skaap soos ‘n model van Parys laat voel en lyk? Inisiatief is die wagwoord!

Wees daar! Neem deel! Bring jou skaap en wen lekker pryse!

Ons kunstenaars is almal oorspronklik van Bloemfontein. LOCAL IS LEKKER! Collin Street van Kovsies, vele kunstenaars van Philip Kotze Sang Skool in Bloem-fontein en Marnet ook oorspronklik van Bloem-fontein gaan ons tot laat vermaak. Die Grey Kollege Boere Orkes speel die aand by die dinee in die Gemeenskapsaal. Ons sien uit daarna om u daar te sien.
Heerlike  vars skaapvleis gaan op die Fees te koop wees by die vleistafel, so bestel voor die tyd en bring jul koel houers saam!

Kom wys wat in jou steek en kom neem deel aan die blommerangskikking-kompetissie. Heerlike pryse te wen.

Wees kreatief met laslappies en kerse maak, asook sandkuns.

Daar gaan heerlike skaapgeregte te koop wees en ook baie ander snoeperye en vele te drink.

Kom kuier saam met ons van vroeg tot laat.

MIS DIT … EN JY MIS UIT!

Smithfield is further entrenching its position as an arts centre with the opening this evening (Friday, 26th) of the art exhibition which marks the opening activity in this year’s BibberChill Festival.

The exhibition has attracted a strong list of local and other entries, with all types of artwork being exhibited, including paintings, sketches, sculpture and photographs.

Works by local artists are finding an increasing number of buyers in many parts of the country, which is encouraging for all concerned.

Among our very active resident artists are Geoff and Anne Montgomery, Peter Retief, Lynden and Rose Lund, Susan Jewell, Fabrice Rebouillet and Anette Malherbe. On the craft side is the work of the energetic Lappies Ladies’ which is widely admired and has great commercial potential if they ever decided to go that route. Also in crafts, Miemie Pretorius has recently qualified as a book restorer and we wish her well with her work. Incidentally, she mentioned the other day receiving a commission by advertising in Smiffie.

In the past few years the number of people working in various arts and craft forms in and around Smithfield has expanded enormously. The growth in all this artistic activity has not only increased the general appeal of Smithfield and area but has given a huge boost to the artists and crafters. There is nothing more rewarding for them than to interact with likeminded people.

The result is that the range of local activity is from professional and established artists to amateurs and beginners. They work in various media – oil, acrylic, watercolour, pencil and charcoal, and styles range from naturalistic to naive.

The Art Exhibition in the Red Barn opens at 17:00 Friday 26th. Lizette Prinsloo, deputy chairman of the BibberChill Committee will make the formal opening address at 18:00.

Sherry, wine and snacks will be provided by the Smithfield artists. The exhibition will run from 09:00 to 16:00 tomorrow (Saturday). At 14:30pm the Grey Band will perform outside the Red Barn.

BibberChill 2009 draws closer with only 57 days before Ou Grietjie blasts off to announce the opening of Smithfield’s contribution to the province’s festival dates.

Although the festival will as usual be held at the Country Club on 27 June, it will officially get underway at the Red Barn on Friday night with an art exhibition by local and other artists.

Among the events on Saturday will be a sheep shearing exhibition and a competition in which each farmer will be able to enter five sheep to be judged for conformation and quality of wool. A greyhound display, will show off these elegant animals at their best – at speed.

The local quilting ladies will be showing some of their spectacular work as well as holding a workshop to introduce newcomers to this fascinating craft. Still at the Red Barn, the art exhibition will continue all day.

One of the interesting exhibits will be by the Smithfield UFO Centre. The stall will also display and sell rockets. Other stalls will sell food, gifts, crafts and there will be an all-day beer tent with live music.

For the increasing number of cycling enthusiasts a marathon will be held over 70km, another over 30-40km, and a fun ride for families.

This year’s BibberChill Fees/Festival takes place on Saturday, 27 June.

Gerhard Wilken has been elected chairman of the organising committee.

Planning meetings have been notable for the enthusiasm shown by people of all ages to ensure that this year the festival is at least as successful as last year.

Although there is still support for the annual event being held within the town, the lack of a suitable alternative venue to the golf course made it the most obvious choice for 2009.

A full programme of events, including sheep shearing and cycling for all ages will be backed up by a selection of popular entertainers, as well as stalls selling a variety of goods and services.

A much improved public address system will provide constant commentary throughout the day, ensuring that visitors are kept fully informed, minute by minute, of what is happening around them.

Attention is being paid to the ease of access to the golf course. Last year the large crowds drawn to BibbrChill resulted in queues of cars forming at the gate. The new reception arrangements will enable incoming visitors to be dealt with more speedily.

Once again, Ou Grietjie will be brought in from the Museum to announce the opening of the BibberChill. It will be fired at intervals throughout the day.
